Syllabus

Instructor: Mr. Gehring

Goals

  • To apply chemical knowledge in a classroom setting and to extend this knowledge to the world around us.
  • To improve problem solving and independent thinking skills as well as prepare for future science courses.
  • To gain an appreciation for chemistry and how it affects our daily lives.

Requirements

  • Lab safety rules must be followed at all times. Failure to comply will result in loss of credit for that lab.
  • Being respectful to each other and responsible for individual actions.
  • Keep your notes and work for each semester of chemistry.  Your finals will be cumulative.  Chemistry is a cumulative subject; each unit will build from the other.  You are responsible for prior material covered.

Student Expectations

  • Respect for the teacher and classmates will provide the best learning environment for all. (Common courtesy)
  • Respect for school property and lab equipment. Students are responsible for damage or breakage of lab equipment.
  • Take care of all personal needs before arriving to class. (Restroom, water, etc.)
  • No food or drinks in the classroom.

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR CHARGED CHROMEBOOK and NOTES IN CLASS DAILY.

  • Take ownership of your success in this class. Develop your own mission statement.
  • The Student/Parent Handbook will be the basis for standard rules.
  • I will be available to answer questions on my school email, gehringc@lisdtx.org or through Canvas Inbox.

Cellphones

  • All cellphones will be put up and silenced.
  • The use of a cellphone during instructional time without the permission of the teacher is prohibited and may result in it being confiscated.
  • Cell Phones that ring, vibrate, or in any other way disrupt the educational process of our class, are grounds for confiscation of the device by Mr. Gehring.
  • Cell phones seen at any time during a test will earn students a zero on that test. A student may not have their cell phone on the body at any time while the test is being taken including trips to the bathroom. Violations will result in an automatic zero on that test, even if the phone was not used on the test.

Getting Help

When in doubt, ask. Don’t wait until we review for the test, it will be too late to learn the information you are having trouble understanding. Chemistry tutorials will be available before and after school. Please let me know ahead of time if you want to receive help after school. I may not always be available so feel free to utilize the other science teachers. I am also available online from 7 am - 5:30 pm for you to ask questions. I will help you if you ask.

Grading

Categories/Percentages

Daily Work

50%

Unit Tests

50%

Attendance

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of school days for any reason. At LHS, this is equal to 9 days per semester (or 18+ days per year). School attendance is important to both academic and social/emotional development. Students who are absent from school at this rate miss out on the valuable learning activities that take place in the classroom, both with the teacher and with peers. While they may complete some or even all of the work missed, the learning experience is significantly altered.

Late Work and Make-up Policy

You are expected to keep up with all assignments and complete them by their due date. Every student is expected to complete every homework assignment. Late work will be assessed a 10 percent penalty for each day it is late until the day of the unit test, after the unit test it will receive ZERO credit. Multiple days absent will result in multiple assignments missed. So please stay active in Canvas as all lectures, notes and assignments will be posted for students to stay caught up with the class. You are responsible to obtain work prior to any planned absence. Please check in with me ahead of time for planned absences. Most test questions come directly from the homework so it is to your advantage to complete the work in a timely manner.

Sickness...

  • On the day an assignment is given out: it is YOUR responsibility to check Canvas for assignments that are started or due.
  • On the day an assignment is due you have two options:  Submit the assignment or contact me with questions about the assignment and set up a new date for assignment submission.
  • Labs:  If you are gone on a day of a lab, you must schedule a time within a week or less to make up the lab or you receive a zero in the grade book.
  • Test: Because tests are scheduled weeks in advance, you are expected to make up the test the day you return. If you are gone on a test day, you must be prepared to take the test the following day. For extended absences, you and your teacher will come up with a plan that best suits both parties.
  • Students who take tests late will be given an alternate version of the test. The learning objectives that the test are modeled after are the same as the original test but the format may be different.

Canvas

In Canvas there will be posted open, due and close dates for all assignments. Each student is responsible for any information on Canvas. This is where they will be able to find notes, homework, labs, and any other digital “handouts.” Students' grades will also be posted on Canvas.

Academic Integrity

Always do your own work. Representing another's work as your own is illegal and will be considered cheating. A zero grade for the assignment will be the result. Working on an assignment as it is corrected or copying other people’s assignments will result in a zero for both parties involved.
