Course Description:

Career Preparation I provides opportunities for students to participate in a learning experience that combines classroom instruction with paid business and industry employment experiences and supports strong partnerships among school, business, and community stakeholders. 

 

Goals for Class:

  • Communicate to the students a clear focus for the day’s class.
  • Successful Student Participation in the Student Learning Process.
  • Student centered activities after instruction.
  • All students are successful in creating a Career Portfolioi.

 

Prerequisites:  This course is recommended for students in Grades 11-12

 

Course Goals:

  1. The student use employability skills to gain an entry-level job in a high-skill, high-wage, or high-demand field. 
  2. The student develops skills for success in the workplace.
  3. The student applies work ethics, employer expectations and interactions with diverse populations, and communication skills in the workplace.
  4. The student applies academic skills to job skills.
  5. The student applies ethical behavior standards and legal responsibilities within the workplace.
  6. The student evaluates personal attitudes and work habits that support career retention and advancement.
  7. The student applies the use of self-development techniques and interpersonal skills to accomplish objectives.
  8. The student applies concepts and skills related to safety at the workplace.
  9. The student identifies skills and attributes necessary for professional advancement.

Assessment:

All assignments are designed to show whether students have met the standards for the course.  The grading policy will follow the LISD handbook.

 

Grade Distribution:

  • 50% Major grades – tests, projects, & notebook
  • 50% Daily grades – quizzes, daily assignments

 

Progress reports will be handed out three times a semester. 

Tutorials:  available before school

Classroom Rules:

 

  • Absence/Make-Up Work:  Excused, verifiable absence must be done within 3 days of returning to class.  It is your responsibility to find out if there is any makeup work to be done, and to make arrangements for doing so. Students absent on a test date will be expected to report to the teacher on the first day back to make arrangements for testing.
  • Students should come to class ready to learn.
  • Policies on cheating are to give all involved a zero on the work and notify the parents.
  • Be kind to others.
  • No FOOD or DRINKS in classroom
  • Do not abuse equipment
  • Keep workstation clean
  • NO CELL PHONES (put in slot provided).  I don’t want to see them on your desk…if I do I will take them up.
  • Remain seated during instruction.
  • Teacher dismisses students at the end of the period.  (The bell does not dismiss class; it only reminds the teacher that time is up.)
  • Use proper protocol at all times.
  • Must work 15 hours per week
  • Attendance is expected to be exceptional
  • No playing games on the internet during class.  If you have extra time then you must read a book or work on something educational.
  • Students must uphold the Fair Use Guidelines & copyright laws when using resource materials from the internet.
  • No headphones or ear buds are allowed.
  • Students are not to go to any unauthorized websites. 
  • Students losing internet privileges are required to complete projects by using the internet elsewhere or by using printed materials. 
  • In addition to the rules listed her students are also responsible for following all guidelines set forth in the LISD Technology and Student Code of Conduct.

 

Homework, Retest, and Class Work Policies:

  • Late work:  10 points will be deducted for each day it is late.
  • Retest – Corrections must be made to the test.  You will attend one tutorial and then you may retest. 

 

Discipline procedures and policies for minor classroom infractions:

  • 1st – warning
  • 2nd – blue card - ISS
  • 3rd – office referral
