English III Lesson Plans

Some of the big questions we will answer this year include:

  • What is the relationship between freedom and responsibility?
  • How does literature reveal the values of a given culture or time period?
  • What questions and conflicts did writers (and cultures) struggle with that are still relevant today?
  • How is our understanding of culture and society constructed through and by language?
  • How do we know what we know?
  • How does the media shape our view of the world and ourselves?
  • How can you use language to empower yourself?

Units:

  • Unit 1: Research - Argumentative
  • Unit 2: Foundations & Encounters: Early American
  • Unit 3: Building a Democracy: The Revolutionary Period
  • Unit4:  The Individual & Society: American Romanticism
  • Unit 5: America Transformed: Romanticism to Realism
  • Unit 6: Contemporary Voices & Visions: Modernism

Other suggested activities

  • Independent reading
    • I will be putting together some resources for digital reading so you have some choices. I want you to find something you will ENJOY reading, and try to make time for it whenever you can
  • Journal writing
    • Write about what is going on in our world, in our country, in our community, and in our homes - who knows... someday, students may be looking at those the way we look at historical primary documents in this class :)
    • This is a great stress reliever, and a great way to find your own voice through writing. Grab your favorite pen and just write.

Reading makes you a better writer...

Writing makes you a better reader...

Reading and writing make you a better thinker!
