HONORS English I Syllabus

Overview:

Throughout this course, we will learn and practice specific reading strategies to make sense of difficult text and to actively hold our thinking while reading.  The required reading for Freshman English includes selections from fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. The focus for writing in will be short responses and analytical essays based on selections read.

Literature:

    • Thief of Always by Clive Barker or Bluefish by Pat Schamz (outside of class)
    • Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose
    • Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare
      West Side Story (connection piece)

Class set copies will be available and an online version will be accessible.

Projects:

  • 12 Angry Men Project- will be completed the week before Thanksgiving in class. If the project is not completed in class, students will be required to work on it over the holiday break (best use your class time wisely). This project will be worth daily grades and a test grade.
  • Research Project- will be completed in May and will count as the ‘Final’ for my class. This project will be weighted heavily for final grades.

Grading:

  • Daily Grades 40%
  • Assessments 60%

Lampasas ISD Grading Policy:

90-100  A
80-89    B
70-79    C
< 69       F

Materials:

  • Pens/pencils
  • Folder
  • Notebook paper
  • Chromebook (charged)

Entering the Classroom: Come in quietly and get to your assigned seat. Check the “Agenda” for the day and get out necessary materials. We will begin each day with 4-5 minutes of silent reading.

Tardy: If you are late (meaning door is closed before you are in the room), go and get a tardy slip from the attendance window by the front office before coming quietly into class and handing me your pass.

Assignments: I will always let you know when work is due. If assignments are not turned in during your class period, it will be late, and 10 points will be deducted from your grade for each day it is late.

Absences: Students are responsible for getting their make-up work. Check the “absent folder” in the classroom for any papers with your name on it. Assignments could also be posted in Canvas. Any quizzes or tests that were missed must be made up during tutorial times or academic period (with approval).

Retests: A failing test, quiz, or daily grade assignment may be redone or corrected for the maximum grade of a 70 within 5 days from the return of the graded work. HONORS students are only allowed 1 redo/correction per 9 weeks. Retakes or corrections are done during tutorials or academic periods (with approval).

Independent Reading (SSR): You are required to bring a book of your choosing to class EVERY DAY, or you may always borrow one from my classroom library. Sustained reading will be done throughout the week and/or on a Friday.

Cheating/Plagiarism: Plagiarism is taking another’s words or ideas and presenting them as your own. This means that even if you alter a source’s words, you did not create the original idea. Copying another student’s ideas is a form of plagiarism. Any form of cheating or plagiarism on any assignment, project, assessment, or paper will result in that assignment not being accepted and a zero in the gradebook. Students who willingly provide other students with access to their work are in violation and will also not receive credit for that assignment.

Bathroom Policy: Ask for permission to leave the room when direct instruction is not taking place. Before you leave the room, you MUST put your cell phone on my desk and create a bathroom pass using the online platform- eHallpass. This is not my rule, this is a campus wide policy. Only one student may use the restroom at a time.

Phone/Electronic Devices: Cell phones are NOT to be used during class, and music devices or game consoles are not allowed in the classroom. If an electronic device/cell phone is out, that student’s device could be taken up or the student could be sent to ISS. If cell phones become a problem in class, then a “whole class” policy will be implemented. Students may use cell phones- ONLY when the teacher allows.

Canvas: This is where my teacher website will be located, along with a calendar of events/lessons throughout the year. Most online assignments will be assigned and turned in through Canvas.
