Course Overview:

Students will cultivate their understanding of the interrelationships of the natural world through inquiry-based lab investigations and field work as they explore the four Big Ideas of energy transfer, interactions between earth systems, interactions between different species and the environment, and sustainability. (College Board 2020) The AP ES course is designed to be the equivalent of a one-semester college introductory environmental science course. The class is designed for students who have a good working knowledge of biology. Students who do well on the AP environmental exam may qualify for college credit and/or may be exempt from taking freshman-level environmental science courses depending on their college or university and field of study.

Required Materials:

  • Folder or some place to keep notes and assignments
  • Basic School supplies (pen/pencil are required, scissors, glue, and/or markers would be helpful)
  • 1 package colored pencils (at least 24)
  • Package of plain, white paper towels (3 pack)

Class Rules:  

  • Be Prompt.  (if not, get a tardy slip from the office)
  • Be Prepared.  (bring all materials every day)
  • Be Present.  (no phones, no earbuds, no food, no leaving)
  • Be A Good Human.  (respect people-including their choices and property)

Year at a glance:

1st 9 weeks:  Units 1 and 2 (Ecosystems and Biodiversity)

2nd 9 weeks:  Units 3 and 4 (Populations and Earth Systems/Resources)

3rd 9 weeks:  Units 5 and 6 (Land/Water Use and Energy Resources/Consumption)

4th 9 weeks:  Units 7, 8, and 9 (Atmospheric Pollution, Aquatic Pollution, Global Change)
